LW or RW? Tell the Difference in 3 Seconds by Looking at the "White Quill"

Apr 02,2026 | Sharrow Archery

1. Why Wing Direction Is Non-Negotiable

Natural turkey feathers are asymmetric by nature, harvested from either the left or right side of the bird:

  • Left Wing (LW): Harvested from the left wing; creates a counter-clockwise spin.

  • Right Wing (RW): Harvested from the right wing; creates a clockwise spin.

The SHARROW Standard: Never mix LW and RW on the same arrow. Conflicting spin forces will cause massive drag and erratic flight. For a stable shot, consistency is key.

2. The 3-Second "Thinner Side" Rule

Pick up a SHARROW premium feather and hold it vertically. Look directly at the white quill (the cross-section at the bottom). You will notice it’s not a perfect square—one side is thick, and the other is sliced into a thin slope:

Left Wing (LW) — The Right Side is Thinner

  • The Visual: Look at the white base. The left side has a thick "shoulder," while the right side slopes down and becomes very thin, almost flush with the surface.

  • The Conclusion: If the Right side is thinner, it is a Left Wing (LW) feather.

Right Wing (RW) — The Left Side is Thinner

  • The Visual: Look at the white base. The right side is the thick "shoulder," while the left side slopes down and becomes very thin.

  • The Conclusion: If the Left side is thinner, it is a Right Wing (RW) feather.

3. Why the "Thinner Side" Must Hug the Shaft

Why does SHARROW emphasize the thinner side? Because the quill needs to wrap around the radius of your arrow shaft.

  • The Thinner Side: Is flexible and allows the feather to sit perfectly flush against the carbon or wood shaft.

  • The Thick Side: If you try to glue the thick "shoulder" side down, the feather will "pop" up, leading to poor adhesion and fletching failure mid-shot.

4. The SHARROW "Flat-Lay" Test

If you are still unsure, lay the feather flat on a table with the fuzzy side up:

  • Left Wing (LW): The right edge of the white quill will touch the table perfectly, while the left side of the feather will "curl" or lift upward.

  • Right Wing (RW): The left edge of the white quill will touch the table perfectly, while the right side of the feather will lift upward.

Expert Advice for SHARROW Archers:

  1. Right-Handed Shooters: We recommend Right Wing (RW). The clockwise rotation helps the feathers clear the bow riser more efficiently, reducing friction.

  2. Left-Handed Shooters: We recommend Left Wing (LW) for optimal clearance.

  3. Match Your Jig: Your fletching jig clamp must match your wing direction. A Left-wing clamp is for LW feathers; a Right-wing clamp is for RW feathers.
